Car overheated could it be a blown head gasket?
I own a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta with 114,000 plus miles on it. It is always maintained properly. On sunday my temperature gauge showed an increase in temperature to 260+, temperature light came on blinking. Immediately pulled over, turned off car and put up hood. Radiator cap is on the reservoir system, cap looked like it was no longer flush to the reservoir. Was able to fix thermostat and put in new coolant. Got the car home, which I was not far from. Towed vehicle. Still showed signs of overheating. Light blinks, is not steady. Noticed some particles in the reservoir, black/brown in color with some on the sensor in the reservoir. No smell coming from exhaust, oil is not milky-brown. No other symptoms of a blown head gasket. Will be changing the water pump and transmission belt to determine if this is an issue. Also upper radiator hose is too hot to touch when running, hot air blows through the vents on high, and lower radiator hose is ice cold. Hoping this is just water pump, what do you think it could be?

PS I am a single mom on single income so I cannot afford to replace head gasket. If it is that, then I am going to junk the car.
The oil shows no signs of coolant or water being mixed into it. There was no white smoke coming from radiator when it showed signs of over heating. No water dripping from exhaust and no white smoke coming from exhaust. There is not a sweet smell when the car runs from the exhaust. Not sure if the water pump has been fixed on this car. I will be checking it, if it has not been replaced it is a plastic fin water pump. I have heard numerous reports of this going bad on a volkswagen. No bubbles in the coolant reservoir when running the vehicle.

Replaced water pump. The fins were made of PLASTIC!!!! broke right in half! Ended up having to take it in to a shop due to a cross threaded bolt on the lower radiator hose and thermostat housing. Thank you for all your responses.

I used to be a slight sceptic of the moon landings. One thing that still bothers me is how easily the astronauts escaped the moon's gravity. I.e., the lunar gravity is 16.7% that of Earth's, so I sort of figure they need a rocket 16.7% that of what propelled them off Earth. Instead, their entire launch vehicle, including fuel tanks, was about the size of a Volkswagen.
Other factors that cross my mind:
- I don't think the moon has a significant atmosphere; perhaps Earth-based space ships have to hold back on their velocity until the air is thinner; thus, they have to be big enough to deliver an Earth-departing fuel load above say 30,000 feet.
- Things that did not launch off the moon and that did launch off Earth, include: a) the lunar orbiter and the third astronaut; b) part of the lunar lander; c) all of the fuel required to control the lunar descent
- Perhaps I don't get the math -- perhaps there is a squared or cubed relationship between 16.7% gravity and 16.7% fuel required to escape the moon's gravity.
- Maybe the Earth's gravity counts as well -- if they launch toward Earth, does it offset the moon's?
Just making stuff up here. Would appreciate a scientist's view.

Hi everyone i have a volkswagen jetta year 200o 2.0 I recently swaped its damaged transmition from a semi new one & also the computer, the vehicle doesnt shift its last 4th gear, and its acceleration isnt at 100%, only when starting from 0mph, the mechanic who was ¨fixing my jetta¨ was a complete irresponsable & simply left my vehicle without a resolution... any ideas of what canbe wrong?

My car is jerking and sometime takes off slow. I know its a transmission problem, but what kind of problem. I went to auto zone but no one could find out where the dipstick is to check the transmission fluid. HELP PLZ!!!!! I really want to find the dipstick to check the fluid, and then bring it to a shop if that's not the problem.
volkswagen polo 2011? petrol 1.2 or diesel 1.2?
i must say the new shape polo impresses me a lot,i managed to get a test drive too and it does,tick most my boxes,if i was to go for one know,it would be a used one,about a year old with low mileage,has to be a 1.2 so i can benefit from low insurance group,tax and beat the fuel pumps at their gain too,but would paying £500 extra for a 1.2 diesel model be a lot more economical and cheaper to run than a 1.2 petrol,thanks
